Not every practice amp needs to be loud to be convincing. The BackStage packs a 6-inch speaker and just 10 watts (RMS), making it a natural fit for apartment sessions, quiet homework, or tucking into a stocking as a genuinely playable gift rather than a toy.
What sets it apart from typical mini amps is Peavey’s TransTube preamp design, engineered to mimic the compression and “push back” feel you get from a 12AX7-driven tube circuit. Instead of a fixed gain stage, TransTube reshapes its response depending on how hard you dig in, so clean chords stay articulate while pushing the drive control opens up into crunch and, eventually, higher-gain snarl. Two switchable channels let you park a clean rhythm tone and a dirtier lead voicing side by side without constantly retuning the front panel.
Tone shaping is kept simple and usable: a 2-band EQ handles high and low shaping, while dedicated Volume and Overdrive knobs let you dial in headroom versus grit independently. An Aux input welcomes a phone or player for jamming along to tracks, and a headphone jack keeps the whole rig silent for late-night practice.
