The Matchless Avalon brings the brand’s signature three-dimensional voicing into a more attainable package without cutting corners on build quality. Rather than relying purely on traditional turret-board assembly, Matchless developed a hybrid construction approach for the Avalon that blends point-to-point wiring, circuit tracing, and turret-style techniques. Every part inside — transformers included — matches what goes into the company’s flagship amps, and each unit is still hand-assembled at their Los Angeles factory.
Power comes from a quartet of EL84 tubes pushing roughly 30 watts, enough headroom for small-to-mid-size stages, club gigs, or a loud rehearsal room where you want the amp’s natural touch sensitivity to shine before you’re forced into full breakup. The preamp runs three 12AX7s (the reverb circuit adds two more for five total), with a 5AR4 rectifier lending that slightly compressed, sag-friendly response players associate with vintage-voiced British-inspired tones.
Channel one keeps things straightforward with Volume, Bass, Treble, and a push/pull Cut control on the master, giving you a way to dial back harshness without losing punch. Around back you’ll find dual speaker outputs with switchable impedance (4, 8, or 16 ohms) plus an effects loop for slotting in time-based pedals after the preamp stage. Hi and Lo inputs, a 3-position rotary switch, and standard on/off and standby switching round out the control layout.
