Description
Fender built the GB Hot Rod Deluxe hand-in-hand with jazz guitar icon George Benson, tailoring a 40-watt all-tube combo around the clarity his soloing style demands. Where a standard Hot Rod Deluxe uses a 12AX7 in the first preamp stage, this variant swaps in a 12AT7 to tame gain and open up headroom—especially rewarding with humbucker-equipped guitars looking for a cleaner, more dynamic breakup.
Under the hood you’ll find two 6L6 power tubes delivering that familiar full-bodied Fender bottom end, backed by a pair of 12AX7s in the rest of the preamp. A 100-watt Jensen C12K speaker, housed in a solid-pine cabinet, projects Benson’s singing tone with plenty of headroom and stage-filling range at 40 watts—enough for club gigs and studio work without pushing into unwanted breakup.
Three selectable channels (Normal, Drive, and More Drive) give you room to move from glassy cleans to gritty overdrive, all shaped by Presence, Reverb, Bass, Middle, Treble, and Master controls plus a Bright switch. Fender’s spring reverb and an effects loop round out the tone-shaping options, so your favorite pedals sit right where they should in the signal chain.
Cosmetically, this is a genuine signature piece: gray-black vinyl covering, silver-strand grille cloth, chrome hardware, vintage chicken-head knobs, and a “GB” logo badge distinguish it from the standard Hot Rod Deluxe lineup.
